Do you own your company or does your company own you?
Since 1980 I have been posing this question to entrepreneurs across the country. Many entrepreneurs get to midlife and realize they have built a great balance sheet but lost control of their lives somewhere along the way.
If you own an established company, it should be providing you and your family with a dream life. Why else would you take the risks and make the sacrifices of building a company? If your company is still demanding long hours and creating stress for you, this may be the most important website you will ever visit.
Imagine running a company in which you have control over the demands it makes on your time. Imaging building a team of people who run your company day to day, intelligently, making sound decisions, providing you with the metrics that make you confident the organization is tracking to its goals. Imagine doing all this while your company is growing in both revenue and profits.
Sound far fetched? It's not.
In fact, what I'm describing is completely consistent with what science in recent years has shown us about how the universe actually works. A scientific discipline called Complexity Theory demonstrates that intrinsic to all systems is a natural propensity to self-organize.
Think about this statement for a moment; where in the natural world is there a manager? The answer is, there isn't, not matter where or how hard you look. Yet nature with incredible robustness packs every niche in every ecosystem with abundant life.
Why then do we as human beings feel that we have to manage our way to accomplishing anything of value? Doesn't it make sense that we should design our companies that swim with the current of reality rather than against it?
Now we can.
For the past twenty years, I have been learning how to apply these scientific principles to the design and operation of businesses. The results are compelling.
